Antimicrobial resistance

WHO Antimicrobial Resistance Secretariat

Following the adoption of the global action plan on antimicrobial resistance in May 2015 and recognizing that antimicrobial resistance is a flagship issue that WHO will have to address for years, WHO significantly restructured its work on antimicrobial resistance.

WHO established a Secretariat for Antimicrobial Resistance, which is located in the Office of the Director-General, to coordinate the work on antimicrobial resistance across WHO (Headquarters, regional offices and country offices). The Director-General also appointed a Special Representative for Antimicrobial Resistance to provide international leadership and to gain further political and intersectoral backing to address antimicrobial resistance through the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA). The Special Representative for Antimicrobial Resistance ensures that all relevant parts of the Organization are actively engaged and coordinated.
