Investing in public health reduces the economic costs of disasters
Every year WHO joins with the global community in marking 13 October as the International Day for Disaster Reduction (IDDR) to raise awareness of the importance of managing risks especially to people’s health and well-being. Following the focus of recent IDDRs on reducing mortality and the number of people affected by disasters, this year’s theme focuses on reducing economic losses from disasters and the associated human costs.

WHO made recommendation on influenza vaccine composition for use in the 2019 southern hemisphere season

From 24-26 September 2018, WHO organized a consultation with an advisory group of experts to review and analyse surveillance data generated by the WHO Global Influenza Surveillance and Response System (GISRS), complemented with other available information. Based on these analysis, WHO issued a recommendation on influenza vaccine composition for use in the 2019 southern hemisphere season. One component has been changed in comparison with the WHO recommendation for the northern hemisphere 2018-2019 influenza season.

High-level conference on the Lake Chad Region

A high-level conference on the Lake Chad Region took place in Berlin, Germany on 3 September 2018. Dr Rick Brennan, WHO Director of Emergency Operations made a statement on the health aspects of the crisis.

Every year on 19 August, World Humanitarian Day brings citizens of the world together to rally support for people living in crises and to pay tribute to the aid workers who help them.

Orientation workshop on National Action Planning for Health Security (NAPHS) for South-East Asia Region

A three-day Orientation Workshop on National Action Planning for Health Security (NAPHS) was held in Dhaka Bangladesh from 17-19 July 2018 with over 40 participants and observers from 10 countries of the Region. WHO Headquarters, the South East Asia Regional Office and the Country Offices together organized the Regional Workshop. The three-step strategic framework of WHO – ‘NAPHS for All’ was discussed in-depth along with the NAPHS toolkit in this workshop.

Pledging Conference for the Contingency Fund for Emergencies (CFE)

A Pledging Conference for the Contingency Fund for Emergencies (CFE) will take place on Monday 26 March 2018 from 14:00 to 17:00 in the WHO headquarters, Geneva Executive Board Room.

WHO Standby Partnerships Meeting

The Standby Partnerships meeting on 5-6 February 2018 includes a workship and bi-lateral meeting with partners.

Early Warning, Alert and Response System Technical Consultation

WHO will hold a technical consultation to address the challenges to harmonizing the work of WHO in the area of early warning, alert and response 12-14 December 2017. There will be participation from nearly 50 representative from all six WHO regions, UN Organizations along with other technical agencies and International NGOs.

GOARN Global Meeting of Partners

More than 200 participants from 100 of the world's leading public health institutions are expected to recommit their partnership to the Global Outbreak Alert and Response Network (GOARN) at the Global Meeting of Partners organized by WHO in Geneva, 5-7 December 2017.

First Global Face to Face Meeting of the WHO Operational Readiness Task Force

The First Global Meeting of the Task Force was hosted by the WHO Regional Office for Europe in Copenhagen on 30 November – 1 December.

International Day for Disaster Reduction (IDDR), held every 13 October, celebrates how people and communities around the world are reducing their exposure to disasters and raising awareness about the importance of reining in the risks that they face.

2017 Global Platform for Disaster Risk Reduction

The Global Platform for Disaster Risk Reduction (Global Platform), as recognized by the UN General Assembly, is the main forum at the global level for strategic advice, coordination, partnership development and the review of progress in the implementation of international instruments on disaster risk reduction. It was established in 2006 and is now the world's foremost gathering of stakeholders committed to reducing disaster risk and building the resilience of communities and nations. The next Global Platform meeting in 22 -26 May in Mexico.
