PrEP pilot launched in Nepal

February 2019 – PrEP is being offered to people at risk of HIV in Nepal through a pilot programme implemented by FHI 360/LINKAGES Nepal, in partnership with Nepal’s National Centre for AIDS and STD Control, National Public Health Laboratory, and Ministry of Health and Population.

The programme offers PrEP to about 100 men who have sex with men, male and female sex workers, and transgender women in one district in the country’s capital Kathmandu. Enrolment in the programme began in November 2018; and 35 people have commenced PrEP, as at 22 January 2019.

Under the programme, participants are offered PrEP for 90 days at no cost, with HIV, STI and other tests included in the care package. The aims of the pilot programme aims include feasibility and acceptability, determinants of uptake, adherence and retention, safety, and STI acquisition.
