Strengthening health security by implementing the International Health Regulations (2005)

International travel and health, and mass gatherings

WHO/A. Esiebo

Global travel exposes many people to a range of health risks. Many of these risks can be minimized by precautions taken before, during and after travel. International Travel and Health (ITH) is a guide for medical and public health professionals who provide advice to travelers.

Mass gatherings are events attended by a sufficient number of people to potentially strain the public health resources of a community, state or nation. The mass gatherings program provides guidance to countries hosting events that will draw unusually high numbers of people.

Manage the risk of international dissemination of diseases

WHO is developing evidence-based guidelines on the effectiveness and impact of travel and trade restrictions to prevent international spread of diseases during outbreaks.
