Global Influenza Strategy 2019 - 2030

11 March 2019 – WHO launched today the Global Influenza Strategy for 2019-2030, aimed at protecting people in all countries from the threat of influenza. The strategy meets one of WHO’s mandates to improve core capacities for public health, and increase global preparedness and was developed through a consultative process with input from Member States, academia, civil society, industry, and internal and external experts.

Recommended composition of influenza virus vaccines for use in the 2019-2020 northern hemisphere influenza season

21 February 2019 - WHO organized a consultation with an advisory group of experts to review and analyse surveillance data generated by the WHO Global Influenza Surveillance and Response System (GISRS), complemented with other available information. Based on these analysis, WHO issued a recommendation on influenza vaccine composition for use in the 2019-2020 northern hemisphere season.

A summary of A(H7N9)

September 2018 - Since March 2013, when the avian influenza A(H7N9) virus infection was first detected in humans, a total of 1567 laboratory-confirmed human cases, including at least 615 deaths, have been reported to WHO in accordance with the International Health Regulations (IHR 2005).

This recommendation relates to the influenza vaccines for use in the forthcoming northern hemisphere 2018-2019 influenza season. A recommendation will be made in September 2018 relating to vaccines that will be used for the southern hemisphere 2019 influenza season.

Up to 650 000 people die of respiratory diseases linked to seasonal flu each year

Up to 650 000 deaths annually are associated with respiratory diseases from seasonal influenza, according to new estimates by the US-CDC, the WHO and global health partners. This marks an increase on the previous global estimate of 250 000 – 500 000, which dates from over 10 years ago
