Kiribati eliminates lymphatic filariasis

7 October 2019 | Geneva -- Although Kiribati’s population is just over 100 thousand, the country is made up of 32 islands in the Pacific Ocean and covers an area of over 3.5 million kilometers.

Despite the enormous challenge posed by the vastness of the area, the country began robust disease surveillance and mass drug administration in 2000. All along it was supported by WHO, the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), Korea Centers for Disease Control & Prevention (KCDC), the Secretariat for the Pacific Community (SPC) and medicines donated by pharmaceutical companies.
