The Institute regards sexual and reproductive health as encompassing a wide range of people's needs from adolescence onward. The Institute works to protect, expand and equalize universal access to information, services and rights that will enable women and men to: avoid unplanned pregnancies; prevent and treat STIs, including HIV; exercise the right to choose safe, legal abortion; achieve healthy pregnancies and births; and have healthy, responsible and satisfying sexual relationships. The Institute recognizes that family planning is a key intervention in promoting maternal, newborn and child health and supports policy initiatives to that end.
The Guttmacher Institute advances sexual and reproductive health and rights through an interrelated program of research, policy analysis and public education designed to generate new ideas, encourage enlightened public debate and promote sound policy and program development. The Institute’s overarching goal is to ensure the highest standard of sexual and reproductive health for all people worldwide.
