Sixty-ninth session of the UN General Assembly

16 SEPTEMBER – 1 OCTOBER 2014 | NEW YORK, NY, USA

Introduction

This coming week, the 69th regular session of the United Nations General Assembly will convene at the UN Headquarters in New York. Heads of State, representatives from UN organizations, civil society, non-profit organizations, entrepreneurs and other influential individuals will gather to discuss this year’s theme on ‘Delivering on and Implementing a Transformative Post-2015 Development Agenda’.

As the Millennium Development Goals pass the 500 day mark and head into the final homestretch, the next few weeks in New York will be crucial in laying the foundation for the post-2015 sustainable development agenda, the eradication of poverty and a new global climate change agreement. Many side events are being planned alongside the General Assembly's first week and some are highlighted in the links on the right.

Background

The General Assembly is the main deliberative, policymaking and representative organ of the United Nations. Comprising all 193 UN member states, it provides a unique forum for multilateral discussion of the full spectrum of international issues covered by the UN charter.
