Hosted by the French Parliament and convened by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of France and PMNCH, a special Parliamentary event took place on Monday 24 October to examine the role of parliamentarians in ensuring women’s and children’s health. The event precedes the PMNCH Board meeting on the 25-26 October which is being hosted by PMNCH Board member – the Ministry of Foreign and European Affairs of France.

25-26 OCTOBER 2011 - Agenda items from the Board meeting include: the approval of the 2012 PMNCH Workplan and budget and the newly-published PMNCH Strategic Framework 2012-15. We are delighted to announce that Tewodros Melesse, the Director-General of International Planned Parenthood Federation (IPPF) has been chosen as the fourth representative of the NGO Constituency. A warm welcome will also be given to the new Private Sector Constituency, with its two new members: Merck and the Novartis Foundation. The Board is to discuss the new consensus on the package of interventions, options for strengthening the global aid architecture and the follow up to the Commission on Information and Accountability and the independent Expert Review Group.

Parliamentary event

24 OCTOBER 2011 - At Parliament House, the Honourable Ministers of Health of Nigeria and Tanzania, French Parliamentarians alongside PMNCH Board members discussed global action and commitments to women’s and children’s health. Efforts and commitments from stakeholders were highlighted, including France’s RMNCH commitment through the G8 Muskoka Initiative, and that of the Inter-Parliamentary Union in supporting Parliamentarians to ensure continuity and accountability in countries. This event aims to raise awareness among high-level French policy makers and Parliamentarians of recent global developments around women’s and children’s health. linking them to the specific actions done at country level with a focus on the follow up by France and Canada in the context of the G8 and the Muskoka initiative.
