Universal health coverage: launch of pilot programmes in Kenya
13 December 2018 - The Government of Kenya today launched in the county of Kisumu a series of pilot programmes for universal health coverage (UHC) to be implemented in several counties of the country. In this video, Sicily Kariuki, Cabinet Secretary for Health in Kenya, explains the key principles of Kenya’s UHC strategy, developed with the support of WHO.
In this 70th anniversary year, WHO is calling on world leaders to live up to the pledges they made when they agreed on the Sustainable Development Goals in 2015, and commit to concrete steps to advance #HealthForAll. This means ensuring that everyone, everywhere can access essential quality health services without facing financial hardship.
13 December 2017—At least half of the world’s population cannot obtain essential health services, according to a new report from the World Bank and WHO. And each year, large numbers of households are being pushed into poverty because they must pay for health care out of their own pockets. Currently, 800 million people spend at least 10 percent of their household budgets on health expenses for themselves, a sick child or other family member.
WHO is releasing a series of regional health financing reports, based on the latest evidence, and highlighting key policy issues facing countries as they make progress towards UHC. Each report focuses on a specific theme relevant to the countries in their region, for example the current situation in terms of financial protection in South-East Asia, and the transition to greater domestic financing for public health services in the Western Pacific region.
